Is your head spinning like ours?

It was a dizzying array of new Zazzle products and product migrations in August and September 2013! It's all very exciting but very difficult to keep track of when everything seemed to happen all at once. In this newsletter, we're going to do our best to recap it all going back to the beginning of August.

During this time we also re-focused Zazzle How2. Our purpose is to accelerate your Zazzle experience by providing you with timely information and resources to help speed the growth of your business.

Our ZazzleHow2 web site has been expanded, plus new Facebook page,  YouTube channel and Twitter profile will keep you up-to-date between eNewsletters with breaking news, such as last night's lunchbox introduction. Pick one, pick all. All Zazzle How2 sites are free just like your email subscription.

Similar to a new product introduction, Zazzle added 20 new shirt styles to the existing line. We were glad to see the pocket tees. There is an additional customizing window for the pocket.

You may have noticed, not a phone case among that list. To recap the phone case migrations, we had to go back through about 6,000 new cases (we have a lot of case designs!) and piece it all together. We were going through them anyway, so we took notes.

Migrating an image from one phone case to another works most of the time, but not every time. Primarily, a successful migration depends on the design. And, not all migrations are created equal. Look for these issues when reviewing your newly-migrated cases:

  • Over-sized images: A good many of our cases were enlarged by a click or two of the enlarge button.
  • HTML stripping: Any links you had in the product description are gone.
  • Description misspelling: Some product descriptions had words misspelled or garbled.
  • Product merchandising: Some cases were not displayed as the original.
  • Categories: Your new cases are in the category of the original product.

Breaking the migrations down by day, there were nine product migration runs for our store. Some runs were continuations, so you may see the same newly migrated product more than once in the chart below.

This was particularly interesting: some product runs did not show up until many days later. We started reviewing products on September 13th when it appeared all the migrations were done. But then on the 14th, we suddenly had many more new products with production dates of 9/4 and 9/5. The lesson here is: don't assume all new products are at the end of your product list.

We ended up deleting about 5% of all migrated cases and re-created about 1%. A 94% success rate on Zazzle's part is impressive!

As of October 2nd, you still could not use the department filters to find any of the migrated cases (however, this works for those we re-created). When you go back to review your migrated products, sort by newest and start at the end of your migrated products rather than the beginning. We find this makes it easier to keep track of where you left off if you are deleting and re-creating cases.

Since we are not privy to Zazzle's internal workings, the chart below is based simply on our look-through of our products and making our best judgment. The Date column should help you track down your own store's migrations and the Migrate From column may be useful in determining to what category your new cases were sent.

Different than any other cases we sell, the Graft XXX case has a metal clasp that locks and unlocks one of six different color frames to an iPhone 5/5S
Here is a golden tidbit
we discovered during our research: Buried at the bottom of the announcement for wrapping paper was the new product introduction of Graft Concepts iPhone 5/5S Case. Why is this significant? One reason is that it was not migrated. All cases have to be "hand-made". Second, we believe that most people overlooked this part of the announcement, as there are less than 7,000 Graft Concepts cases in the MarketPlace compared with hundreds of thousands of all other cases. Here is a link to the Graft Concepts case design tool: http://www.zazzle.com/cr/design/pt-graft_case

Another new product seems not to have made it through the automatic process. On September 12th, Zazzle announced a migration: Savvy iPhone 5 Cases to PUSA iPhone 5C Cases. Maybe we missed something, but we found no PUSA cases in our store or the MarketPlace, and there's no way that we can see to make them.

We still have plenty of catching up to do. Hope this summary has helped shed some light on all that happened. Here's to accelerated sales!
